Hair Care 101: How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?
You’ve probably heard that shampooing your hair less frequently is better for your locks. Some people have even ditched the use of shampoo completely to keep their hair lush and lustrous. However, how often you should wash your hair is totally dependent on your hair type, skin type, and lifestyle.
What does shampoo do to your hair?
Shampoo is an emulsifier that’s designed to cleanse your scalp and remove excess dirt and oil. Shampoos work the same way that detergents do for your clothes; they leave your hair and scalp feeling clean and smelling fresh.
However, because of the chemical nature of shampoo, using it too much can strip your hair of its natural oils. Serving as a protective barrier, these natural oils moisturize your locks and keep them volumized. Overwashing your hair could then lead to dryness, brittle strands, and other hair damage.
Signs of Overwashing
While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how many times you should shampoo your hair, you can certainly do a lot of damage to it by overwashing. This practice should be avoided to maintain your hair’s health and overall look. To know if you’re overwashing your hair, here are some of the signs you should watch out for:
1. You have dry scalp and hair
Most shampoos on the market use sulfates and other harsh chemicals. When you shampoo your hair a lot, these chemicals suck out the moisture from your hair and scalp, making them dull and dry.
2. You have a lot of dandruff
Dandruff is a sign of overwashed hair. As mentioned, using too much shampoo will lead to a dry scalp. This can cause it to become flaky, resulting in dandruff.
3. Your hair color is fading quickly
If you have colored hair, overwashing can cause your color to fade. Hair dye generally lasts four to six weeks, but using too much regular shampoo to wash your hair will make it fade much quicker. To keep your hair color’s vibrancy, consider washing with just conditioner or using a shampoo designed for colored hair.
4. Your hair looks less shiny
Dry hair is dull hair. Using too much shampoo takes away your hair’s natural sheen and makes it look less lustrous. Additionally, washing your hair too much makes it look flatter.
Should you shampoo your hair daily?
In general, it’s recommended that you wash your hair every other day. However, there are groups of people who need to wash their hair on a daily basis. People who belong to these groups tend to have excess sebum, dirt, and sweat in their hair and scalp, which can be managed with shampoo:
- Those with thin or fine hair
- Those who exercise daily and sweat profusely
- Those who live somewhere incredibly warm and humid
- Those who are regularly exposed to pollution
- Those who use a lot of hair products on a daily basis
On the other hand, hair washing shouldn’t be done as often if you have thick, coarse, textured, or colored hair.
